Fort Assault Guide — How to Capture Every Fort

AC Black Flag Resynced fort assault — capture enemy strongholds Forts are scattered across the Caribbean, one per map region, and they're not the pushovers you remember from the original. Resynced replaces the old "bomb the walls until they surrender" formula with a new dynamic morale system that changes the entire flow of a fort assault. Here's how to take every fort on the map.

What's New — The Dynamic Morale System

In the original Black Flag, forts had a hidden health bar. Bombard them enough times and the commander surrendered, fight over. Resynced throws that out entirely.

Now every action you take — cannon hits, mortar strikes, destroying wall defenses, cutting down the flag, killing soldiers during the boarding phase — contributes to lowering the fort's morale. When morale drops low enough, instead of surrendering, the fort commander stands up and fights. You have to kill him to claim the fort.

This means fort assaults now have a proper climax: a duel with the commander himself on the walls of the fort you've been shelling for the last ten minutes.

Fort Locations & Difficulty

Each map region contains exactly one fort. Difficulty scales with the region — early-game forts in the north are more forgiving than the fortresses guarding the southern seas.

Region Difficulty Notes
Northern waters Easy Good first target; test your assault strategy here
Central waters Medium Stronger defenses, more wall cannons
Southern waters Hard Toughest fortifications, heaviest enemy ship escorts
Remote waters Hard Isolated but well-defended; long sail from port

Start with the northern fort to learn the new morale mechanics before tackling the harder ones.

The Assault Process — Step by Step

Phase 1: Naval Bombardment

This is where most of your damage comes from — and where most of the morale drain happens.

  1. Approach with mortar range: Stop outside the fort's cannon range and open with mortar fire. Target the wall defenses first — destroying cannon emplacements reduces the fort's ability to damage you back and deals a heavy morale hit.
  2. Powder barrels are your friend: Mortar strikes near powder barrels trigger area-of-effect explosions. Look for clusters of barrels on the walls and aim for them — one well-placed shot can destroy multiple defenses at once.
  3. Close for broadsides: Once the outer cannons are thinned out, close in and broadside the main structure. This phase chips away at the fort's remaining health and drives morale down further.
  4. Watch for alerts: Attacking a fort alerts nearby enemy ships. They'll sail in to defend it — deal with them quickly before they pile up, or switch targets and board them for repair supplies mid-assault.

Phase 2: Boarding

When the fort's defenses are sufficiently crippled, the "Board" prompt appears. Your crew storms the walls.

  • You're now fighting on foot inside the fort alongside your crew.
  • The fort is populated with soldiers of varying ranks — officers, brutes, and standard infantry.
  • Every kill contributes to the morale meter. Focus on high-value targets (officers) for bigger morale drops.
  • Cutting down the fort's flag deals a major morale hit. Look for the flagpole and prioritize it.

Phase 3: The Commander Fight

This is the new part. When morale bottoms out, the fort commander doesn't surrender — he stands up and draws his weapon. This is a proper boss fight on the fort walls.

  • The commander is a skilled melee combatant. Use everything you've learned: perfect parries, dual-wield combos, and consumables.
  • His health bar is significant — this isn't a cinematic kill. Bring your best swords.
  • Once he falls, the fort is yours.

Rewards — Why Bother?

Capturing a fort is worth the effort for several reasons:

Reward Detail
Points of interest revealed The fort highlights all collectibles, treasure maps, and secrets in its surrounding region
Kenway's Fleet missions unlocked New trade routes and fleet missions become available, boosting passive income
Safe harbor Captured forts serve as friendly ports where you can dock, repair, and resupply
Lump sum of Reales The fort's treasury is yours — a solid payout for each capture

The region-reveal alone is worth it for completionists. Nothing beats sailing into a region where every point of interest is already marked on your map.

Tips for a Clean Assault

  • Mortar the walls first, not the main building. Wall cannons are your biggest threat during the bombardment phase. Clear them before you close in.
  • Bring a strong crew. Crew capacity upgrades mean more soldiers storming the walls with you during the boarding phase — faster morale drain, fewer enemies targeting you.
  • Target powder barrels for AoE damage. A single mortar shell near a powder barrel cluster can destroy three or four wall defenses at once. Efficiency matters when enemy ships are closing in.
  • Recruit all three officers before attempting harder forts. Lucy Baldwin's Perfect Brace helps during the boarding phase if you're taking heavy fire. The Padre fights alongside you. Deadman Smith's double broadside volley speeds up the bombardment phase significantly.
  • Clear enemy ships first if you're struggling. If the alerted defenders keep interrupting your bombardment, sail away from the fort, deal with them, then return. The fort doesn't regenerate morale once drained.
  • Don't ignore the flag. During the boarding phase, cutting down the fort's flag is a massive morale hit. It should be one of your first objectives after landing.
